The story

Hurricane is where most people sleep, fuel up, and stage from. It has the restaurants, groceries, and lodging that the smaller towns down the corridor don't — which makes it the practical hub for everything to the east and the lakes to the south.

Its existence is owed to one stubborn feat of engineering: the Hurricane Canal, dug largely by hand between 1893 and 1904 to carry Virgin River water up onto the bench. That water turned dry rock into farmland and made the town possible. You can still trace parts of the old canal on foot today.
